4 Steps to Manifesting Your Purpose: Step 3 – Silence
by Michael Yang on December 8, 2011
“Hearing is possible for everybody. Listening is possible only for those who are silent.” - Osho
So far, we’ve talked about Step 1 – Acknowledgment and Step 2 – Ownership in manifesting your purpose. Step 3, has been particularly important to me in the last few years and this step is practicing Silence.
We are constantly bombarded by noise. Most notably is the voice that we hear in our heads. You know, the one making the little comments and judgements to ourselves. This voice is the voice of our ego. The ego reacts to the events we experience each day.
Reactions of the ego go on to influence the most powerful tool we have, our mind. Influenced by the reactions of the ego, the mind generates thoughts and it’s these thoughts that guide the way we live our lives and experience our world.
Notice that I said our egos, meaning, we are not our ego. Rather, our ego is something that belongs to us or is a part of us. If our ego is something that we have, and our mind is a powerful tool that we have, then who are we and what is our purpose?
This is where Silence comes in. After Step 1, acknowledging that the possibility exist for you to be and do something you feel is amazing in your life, and then Step 2, taking ownership for all that is being created and experienced around you, the time has come to set the stage for your meaningful purpose to be revealed to you.
Silence Calms and Focuses You
Constantly, there is noise. If it’s not cars or planes or people talking on the outside, it’s the voice of the ego on the inside. Most of the time, unless it’s something really distracting, we learn to drown out what we deem to be noise and distraction in an attempt to focus. This habit of drowning things out dulls our sense of hearing and ability to listen. Over time, indiscriminately drowning things out makes it more difficult to listen for the very subtle, but important clues that point you in the direction of your highest purpose.
It may take a little practice at first, but as you learn to be silent and are able to distinguish between mind chatter versus intuition, your sensitivity to the subtle nudging of your intuition becomes more heightened. You become more sensitive to the messages, clues, and guidance that the Universe is always ready to deliver.
That’s why when you hear “follow your heart”, it’s the same as saying “listen to your intuition”. Your heart and intuition are your connection to the Infinite Universal Consciousness.
When an aim is identified, namely, to realize and know your purpose, a powerful thing to be able to do is to be quiet and calm yourself. In this zone of quiet, focused, intense concentration you’ll find a very peaceful clarity. It acts as a positive feedback cycle, where the more calm and quiet you are, the more focused, unshakeable, and confident you are.
As your silence and grounded-ness allow you to more fully align with the Universal Consciousness, you will experience the feeling of your actions being guided. Not only will the steps you take progressing forward be in alignment with your Highest Purpose, but shifts will occur in other aspects of your Being that positively reinforce and amplify your progress.
Silence Shifts Your Mindset
When the mind is racing through thoughts like a chicken with its head cut off, so much energy is spent trying to “catch” it that there’s no time or mental capacity left to devote to things that really matter. In the practice of silence, the aim is not to stop the mind from having thoughts. That’s impossible.

In Calm of the Storm
Rather, the focus is to just sit (or stand) and be quiet; to sit in the eye of the storm. When the focus shifts from trying to quiet that which cannot be silenced, to simply being silent, you begin to show yourself that focus and clarity are possibility, that focus is available. Once that crucial awareness is reached, it’s as if a new way of being snaps into place for you.
Through Silence, Transformation Happens
In that moment of clarity, when you know that focus and clarity are available, a transformation occurs. You have experienced, even if it was for one brief, fleeting moment, transformation; a new way of being.
Now, you’re not stuck in the realm of “i don’t know what I’m supposed to do” or “I don’t know what I’m about”. You’ve experienced a moment of knowing! You have allowed yourself to see that clarity, knowing and focus is possible, and that you are capable of it.
Even though we may have experienced it before, or have had glimpses of this knowing before, to be actually conscious of it is a whole different story. It’s like a baby, that’s just taken its first steps or has just started walking. Once it starts walking, it has transcended its state of crawling/not walking.
Now with consistent practice, the baby can take itself places it hasn’t been able to before. Now, a whole new world is available to experience. This same goes for us. Once we come into awareness of a new way of being, living becomes a whole new experience that builds upon itself to something amazing.
In Silence You Will Discover a Process
It’s rare that a purpose immediately reveals itself in its final and ultimate state. Like anything worthwhile, it’s a process that unfolds and reveals itself over time. Through silence and gradually learning more to listen and trust your intuition, the path you’ll be taken on will guide you towards specific people, places, and experiences while helping you to avoid others.
Oftentimes, your mind will come in and say that it is a lonely journey or try to make you wrong for going through the process. Yes, in the search and process of manifesting your highest purpose, of course you are alone! It is your own unique and personal journey. You’re not trying to manifest someone else’s highest purpose, you are manifesting and uncovering your own highest purpose! Alone does not have to mean lonely, especially when the boundless Universal Consciousness is supporting you and has your back!
Many that are outside the awareness of this dynamic, give up the process too easily and too soon. Even though the option is always present and available to get into the process of manifesting your highest purpose, for most, the time may not be right just yet.
In the meantime, while the desire builds to know and experience one’s highest purpose, every moment living, working and playing is an opportunity to find silence and learn to listen to your intuition. At this very moment, your highest purpose is ready and waiting to be revealed to you. Be silent and prepare your heart to listen for it!
